Burnet football’s playmakers take over against Jarrell
The Burnet High School football team performed well against Jarrell Aug. 17 in its final scrimmage before the start of the 2023 season.
The Bulldogs scored numerous touchdowns and allowed a couple of Cougar scores.
Head coach Bryan Wood said what stuck out offensively was the passing game.
“We played catch pretty well,” he said. “Last week we talked about the drops. We didn’t have that against Jarrell. I felt like we did a quite better job. We also had a number of explosive plays.”
Defensively, the Bulldogs displayed the energetic enthusiasm to defend that challenges offenses to be at their best. Wood called it a consistent performance from the Bulldogs.
“The energy was good,” he said. “We swarmed to the football.”
Wood commended junior quarterbacks Rhett Murray and Marcus Pimentel, who continue to be deadlocked for starting quarterback.
“They both keep grading out exactly the same,” he said. “They both competed really hard and both are being productive. This week we’ll give them both the same reps and let it play out.”
Senior receiver and outside linebacker Trenton Park played well on both sides of the ball, the coach said.
“He had a couple of carries from the backfield and made a few big catches,” Wood said. “Defensively, he’s finding a way to get to the ball. He had a great scrimmage. He’s one of those kiddos you’d like to have 50 of them.”
The coach noted the Bulldogs did more than display their knowledge of the playbook throughout the scrimmage.
“I feel like we grew up,” he said. “We stayed pretty healthy.”
